— The Trainer

Samantha
Levinson

I came to the reformer after a life spent moving and bringing people together — from Panama and Thailand to New York, Hungary and now Bologna. I’ve trained in studios across the world and stay close to where movement is heading, while keeping the method classically grounded. Teaching is that same work in a different room: meeting you exactly where you are, then building from there.

I don’t run classes — I build programmes, one body at a time, rewritten around your strength, your history and how you feel that week. First time on a reformer or years deep, you get my complete, undivided attention for a full 50-minute session, in English, Spanish or Italian — whichever feels like home.

I don’t teach in a vacuum. I’ve stepped into studios and studied methods across the world — learning from a wide range of teachers, watching where the practice is heading, and carrying the best of it back to you. Classically grounded, globally curious — and now, home in Bologna.

— Why me

Why train
with me?

Bologna has no shortage of reformer studios opening right now — and the good ones do group work well. What I offer is different: a globally trained perspective, built in major cities around the world, and a room that’s entirely yours.

My background is in high-intensity fitness — years of intervals, cycling and functional strength across some of the world’s best-known studios. It’s exactly why I teach the reformer the way I do: as the low-impact complement that keeps your joints, core and mobility ready for everything else you love.

Why the
reformer

Low-impact, joint-friendly and endlessly adjustable. The springs challenge and support you at once — so the work scales to your body, finds your deep core, and builds strength you keep for decades, not just for summer. Gentle on the joints, and a gift for runners and anyone who trains hard.

Did you know

Lighter springs are often harder, not easier — less support means your core works harder to keep the carriage steady.

Did you know

It wasn’t always called Pilates. Joseph Pilates named his method Contrology — “the complete coordination of body, mind and spirit.”

Did you know

The machine gives beginners structure and feedback, which makes correct form easier to find than on the mat alone.

Do it as your whole workout, as the complement to a harder one, or simply as the thing that leaves you taller, calmer and stronger at the end of a day.

New to the reformer?

Your first
session.

The reformer can look like a medieval contraption. It isn’t. There’s no class to keep up with and no back row to hide in — just the two of us, and a machine that adjusts to you. Here for good or in Bologna for a few days, you’re welcome on it.

  1. We talk firstA few questions about your body, your history and what you want — before you touch the machine.
  2. No experience neededEveryone is a beginner on the reformer. I set the springs and the pace around exactly where you are today.
  3. In your languageWe work in English, Spanish or Italian — and honestly, the reformer is its own language. Cue, breath, movement: nothing important gets lost.
  4. Injuries are welcomeBacks, knees, post-natal, desk-bound shoulders — tell me, and we build around them, not past them.
  5. What to bringGrippy socks and clothes you can move in. That’s it — the reformer and the rest are here.
  6. 50 minutes, all yoursMy complete attention, start to finish — and a clear plan for where we go next.

The soundtrack

No two classes
share a playlist.

I build the music like the session — a warm-up, a groove, a build, a peak, a landing. The tempo does half the coaching.

Warm-up · ~95 BPM

Reggaeton

We open with hips. Reggaeton to loosen the guard and set the tone — the reformer should feel good before it ever feels hard.

The groove · ~105 BPM

Afrobeats & funk

Control work that moves like dance. This is where precision stops feeling like a chore and starts feeling like rhythm.

The build · ~122 BPM

House

Four-on-the-floor for the long, honest sets. House keeps the carriage steady and your breath right on the beat.

The peak · ~140 BPM

Hard techno

When we go for it, the drop is the rep. Hard techno for the round that asks for everything you brought.

Cool-down · ~70 BPM

Ambient

Then we bring it all the way down. Something slow to stretch into — you leave taller and calmer than you walked in.

★★★★★

Eight weeks in, I lift my toddler without my back locking up. Every session is built around my body that day — not a class to keep up with. I've never felt this strong.

Frequent
questions

Still wondering whether the reformer is right for you? Ask me directly — I read and answer every message myself.

Do I need any experience?

No. Many clients start their very first reformer session here. We build from the ground up.

How do I choose which class?

There are four styles, each a private 50-minute session: Core & Posture (the place to start), Strength & Sculpt, Mobility & Flow and Restore & Release. Pick by how you feel, what you want and where it lands in your week — or take the 30-second “Find Your Class” matcher and it’ll choose for you. You’re never locked in: mix and match session to session.

What should I wear?

Fitted activewear and grippy socks. Spares are available at the studio.

How long is a session?

A focused 50 minutes on the reformer, plus a little time on either side to settle in and check in.

What languages can we train in?

English, Spanish or Italian — whichever you’re most comfortable in. Just let me know when you book. And where we don’t share a language, the reformer still speaks for itself.

Where do private sessions happen?

At Underdog Training Lab in Bologna, on my own reformer. Exact entrance details arrive with your booking confirmation.

What actually is reformer Pilates?

It’s Pilates performed on a spring-loaded sliding carriage. The springs add adjustable resistance and support, so movements scale to your body and your deep core works throughout. Joseph Pilates called the whole method “Contrology”.

Reformer or mat — which should I start with?

Both are part of the same method. Many beginners like the reformer first: the machine’s support and feedback make correct form easier to find, and the resistance scales to your ability.

Is it good for back pain and posture?

Pilates is among the better-researched approaches for easing chronic low-back pain and building core stability, and it can improve flexibility and balance. As with any exercise, check with your doctor first if you have an injury or medical condition.

I’m not flexible or strong enough — is that a problem?

That’s exactly who the reformer is for. The springs give support where you need it and resistance where you’re ready, so the work meets your body today — not where it “should” be. Flexibility and strength are what we build, not what you bring.

I have an injury, or I’m pregnant or postpartum — can I train?

Often yes, with the right adjustments. Tell me what’s going on — and bring any guidance from your doctor or physiotherapist — and I’ll shape the session around it. For pregnancy and the postpartum return we work to your clearance and at your pace. If something needs a medical green light first, I’ll tell you.

Can Pilates work alongside my other training?

Absolutely — that’s often how I use it. If you run, lift or do HIIT, the reformer is the low-impact work that keeps your joints, core and mobility ready for all of it. It also stands perfectly well on its own.

I’m only in Bologna for a few days — can I book?

Yes — plenty of people find me while visiting. Book online, get instant confirmation, and meet me on the reformer. No membership and no commitment: just a great session while you’re in the city.

How often should I come?

Joseph Pilates recommended about three sessions a week. Realistically, a consistent one to three sessions a week makes a real difference — many clients rotate the four class styles across the week (say Strength early, Mobility mid-week, Restore at the end) and save with a 5- or 10-pack.

Let’s
get to work.

Pick a time, tell me a little about your body and your goals, and you’ll get instant confirmation. Then just meet me on the reformer — local or visiting, first-timer or not.
